Preparing for Open Water Competitions

85 entries have been received so far for the SW [and Dorset] Open Water Championships 2017 which take place in Weymouth on 24 June. Unfortunately not many swimmers have signed up for the Region’s introductory Open Water Swimmer Development course which is now at risk of being cancelled.

Your coach may already have discussed with you race tactics such as dolphining, drafting, bodysurfing, impeding, negative splitting, railroading, sheltered-side breathing, slip streaming and more. You may already be putting other specialty moves unique to open water racing into your training preparations in open water conditions ahead of the competition.

Or you may have considered just turning up to swim without such knowledge, not practised in open water conditions, which is inadvisable, or never swum in a wetsuit.

Part 2 – Open water swimming skills and practice on 3 June 2017 at Preston Beach, Weymouth.

Keri-anne Payne announces retirement

Keri-anne Payne has called time on her illustrious swimming career that has spanned more than 12 years.

Her many accolades include a 10km Marathon Swimming silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and she was twice FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Champion in 2011 and 2013.

Payne will now turn her focus to her new business venture Triscape, started with husband and former Olympic swimmer David Carry, promoting healthy and active lifestyles for all.

EDOWSC Annual General Meeting Postponement

Update 30 Jan 2017: Unfortunately we have to postpone the AGM due to insufficient numbers for the orginal booking. We will update members shortly on an alternative venue but the provisional date will be 28 Mar 2017. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

We encourage as many of you as possible to come along and celebrate the successes of last year and share your feedback. And we are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers with ideas which could move the club forward. Any contribution is always welcome so please don’t hold back if your time is limited and you fancy making a difference.

British Triathlon and RLSS UK set to grow safe open water swimming

Open water swimming is set to grow as British Triathlon and the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) have confirmed a new partnership to support the promotion and development of the sport.

The three-year partnership recognises the potential growth of open water swimming and the need to develop the sport’s existing infrastructure to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for new and existing participants.

ASA South West Open Water Development Course 2016

Paid open water coaching opportunities

Coastal Activity Park, Boscombe

The Coastal Activity Park, Boscombe has recently been rewarded funding through Sportivate from Sport England to run a women’s coastal beach series including the following sports; Open Water Swimming, Netball, Fitness and Beach Tennis.

Lauren Mawdsley, Coastal Acitvity Park Assistant (Tourism & Corporate Communications) has advised us that they are currently looking for a coach to run these sessions.

ASA South West Open Water Development Course 2015

ASA South West Region are holding a weekend course to develop Open Water swimmers on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 May 2015 starting at 8.30am.

The course will be held at the Osprey Leisure Centre Portland. Dorset DT5 1BD.

Accommodation will be provided at Portland YHA, DT5 1AU.

The course is designed for young swimmers with an upper age limit of 18 on 31 December.
